About Us
Since 1940, the Marvin family has been deeply involved in the science, research, art and practice of sugaring.

Before there was Butternut Mountain Farm there were Marvins in Maple…

In the 1940’s James Wallace Marvin began conducting research on maple at the University of Vermont. In 1943, he and fellow researcher, Fred Taylor set out to find a permanent location to conduct their research and in 1946 with the donation of land in Underhill, UVM’s Proctor Maple Research Center was established.

The Beginning of Butternut Mountain Farm…

early_daysIn 1973 the outlook for making maple syrup as a full time livelihood was grim. It was a hobby for some, an activity of old timers and no way to make a living (today maple syrup production is a bright spot for agriculture in Vermont). In spite of the poor initial outlook, David Marvin was determined to develop a farm based around his love of maple.

nowDavid has always been committed to being a value-added diversified maple supplier. This means that as a company we strive to have a market for our syrup through having a wide range of products and customers.  As a company Butternut Mountain Farm has also always been committed to having enough syrup to maintain all of the markets we’ve developed and the relationships we’ve built. To that end, in the early 1980’s after several poor seasons of maple production David decided to purchase syrup from other producers to supplement the syrup made on the farm. This decision turned Butternut Mountain Farm into more than just a producer of maple syrup, it became a marketer as well.
