Maple Facts

The internal pressure of a sugar maple may be as much as 20 pounds per square inch on a warm day after a freezing night – the pressure is triggered by the thermal shock. It is the extent to which this pressure exists that determines how well sap will run.

With the new setup in the sugarhouse running smoothly, we've been able to spend more time in the woods.  To date we've made nearly 2280 gallons of syrup and the sap has been running nearly 24/7. However, after more than a week of near perfect sugaring weather there's uncertainty in the forecast ahead. As it stands right now, temperatures are predicted to go into the 50's, and after tomorrow night there are no freezing temperatures in the forecast.  Without a good freeze to regenerate the trees and sap flows, these temperatures have the potential to bring a halt to the season.
